Wireless Headphones – Your Guide to a Smarter Purchase

Let’s admit it – we’ve all had our share of tragedies when it comes to wired headphones. We’ve had them twisted, pulled and caught between car doors. We’ve even come close to damaging our laptops when we pulled away unknowing the wires were still connected. That’s exactly why the need to bring wireless headphones became crucial. From the last two years, Google Trends has shown an increasing rise in demand for wireless headphones instead of the wired ones. They’re more comfortable, more portable and don’t come with the potential risk to injure anything.

2017 has seen many excellent products in this regard but when it comes to making a choice, we all need some guidance. This review will help you make your next headphones purchase easier and come on, you need a wireless one. It’s the 21st century!

What’s Popular These Days?

With something as trendy as wireless headphones, we would naturally expect many brands competing to produce the finest quality in the market. But only some can be at the top of their game. Here’s four of the most popular ones that have seen a rise in popularity in the US over the last few months:

  1. Bose QuietComfort 35
  2. Sony MDR-1000X
  3. Sennheiser Momentum Wireless
  4. Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2

Being one of the most searched for wireless headphones in the market, Bose QuietComfort 35 ranks number one in the top brands. What is it about these pair of headphones that makes them so special, and should you buy them just because they’re the number one brand? Let’s find out!

The Pros

  • Sound Quality and Noise Cancellation:

Perhaps the best feature that makes the Bose QuietComfort 35 the winner of its kind is its impeccable active noise-cancelling and amazing sound quality. One of the reasons I need to listen to music is when I need to cut myself off from the world, and it irks me to no end when I can’t enjoy my peace even with my headphones on. Bose promises a noise-free internal environment and cancels out any unwanted external sounds, be it the busy crowd sounds or a boring lecture you don’t want to hear.

  • Design

Who doesn’t want what they wear look good on them? After all, headphones make a nice, hip accessory. These Bose headphones come in a trendy design and you have the option to choose between silver and black colors.

  • Battery Life

Bose QuietComfort 35 has a battery life of up to 20 hours which is pretty great! On top of that, this new model comes with rechargeable batteries so you won’t have to pay extra money when the battery runs out.

  • Versatile

Sure, it’s a wireless headphone, but what do you do if your 20-hour battery runs out? Bring out the cords of course! Bose comes with wires so you can pretty much transform it into wired headphones if you want.

  • Comfortable

If you’re planning to sit with your headphones on for hours, you need them to be comfortable. Bose QuietComfort 35 is pretty easy on the ears and doesn’t make you need to stop using them unless you want to.

  • Comes with a Carrier Case

To carry around your headphones, you shouldn’t just stuff them in your bag. That’ll just increase the mortality of your device. Bose comes with a carrier case so you can easily take your headphones without having to put them in a risk of damage.

The Cons

  • Heavy

These headphones may be a little heavier than its competitors.

  • Expensive

While most good headphones are on the high-end, there’s no denying the Bose QuietComfort 35 is expensive as well (Priced at $350 on Amazon).

When has Sony ever let us down? This new model by Sony is one of the most technologically advanced headphones to be manufactured as of yet. It’s almost as popular as Bose mainly because of the similarities in the features between them.

The Pros

  • Sound Quality and Noise Cancellation

Like the Bose model, Sony too has some very advanced noise cancelling features, arguably even better than Bose. So both these pair of headsets let you enjoy your music without outside interference. But there’s something about Sony that Bose doesn’t have. With these headphones, you can choose to reconnect with the outside world with a simple hand swipe.

  • Sensors

What makes the Sony MDR-1000x stand out is its advanced sensors. These headphones have an inbuilt sensor that can detect the shape of your face and whether you wear glasses or not and adjust the comfort automatically.

  • Battery Life

The battery life is up to 20 hours, similar to Bose QuietComfort 35.

  • Can be made into Wired Headphones

The Cons

  • Uncomfortable

Being slightly more heavy than the Bose model, Sony MDR-1000x might not be too comfortable.

  • Expensive

Priced at $398 on Amazon, these headphones are a lot more on the high-end than most models.

What a mouthful! The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless headphones are also one of the most sought-after brands, coming close to the Jabra Move.

The Pros

  • Comfortable

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a soft, comfortable pair of headphones that are stable and sit perfectly on your ears with little or no movement.

  • Battery Life

Even better than Bose, this Sennheiser model has a great battery life and lasts longer than most headphones.

  • Sound Quality

There’s a reason why this model is one of the best in its kind. The main purpose of a good pair of headphones is to provide excellent sound quality. The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless does not disappoint in this area.

The Cons

  • Expensive

Unless you have a lot of money to spend on your purchase, the price tag on the product is always a wise thing to consider. The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless Headphones are a lot pricier than most brands. ($400 on Amazon)

  • Non-versatile

We already talked about Bose coming with wires as a bonus and they can be useful at times. The Sennheiser models offers no accessories of such kind and extra cords for your devices have to be purchased which adds to your overall price.

The Plantronices BackBeat Pro 2 is a great headset with a lot of versatility – the main reason why it’s been so popular.

The Pros

  • Affordable

  • Great Features

This model offers features like pausing the sound when they are removed from the ears.

  • Versatile

They can be made into wired headphones like the Bose and Sony models. In addition, they make good headsets for calls.

  • Battery life

With a battery life up to 24 hours, the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 are great for travelling

Choosing Your Wireless Headphones

Reviewing these features, I feel the Bose QuietComfort 35 has a good reason to be at the top. With great sound quality and active noise cancelling, versatility and a good battery life, it’s a pretty good purchase at $350. However, coming close to that is the Sony MDR-1000x with a lower price and excellent technological features. The Sennheiser Momentum is great too! But the price tag on it might just be a little too overwhelming. And being a person who needs to look trendy, the Plantronics model with its boring design just won’t work for me.

So, when you’re out to buy a pair of wireless headphones, you need to ask yourself what YOU want and then choose the one that ticks most of your boxes.
