They might not look like the cutest phone cases in the market, but they’re definitely stronger than the average phone case. Ever since some of the latest smartphones started becoming waterproof, many companies thought to make waterproof phone cases too. This year, in particular, they have created hype worldwide and why not? Now you can take your phone to the swimming pool too!
In this article, we’ll look at some of the best water and weatherproof phone cases available for the iPhone. If you’re looking to buy yourself one, this is a good place to start.
The Lifeproof Fre phone case helps to keep your iPhone sealed and protected. The case has a double plastic covering and envelopes your phone from the front and behind. The touch screen works perfectly even with the built in screen protector. The Lifeproof Fre also has snap clamps on the underside that protect the USB jack. A similar clamp protects the headphone jack too so you don’t have to worry about the water getting in from those ports. The Lifeproof Fre isn’t as bulky as one might expect and adds only a few more ounces to your iPhone.
However, since the iPhone is famous for its characteristic slimness, the phone case does add a few millimeters of thickness. Another drawback to the Lifeprood Fre phone case is that it’s designed only for the OEM cable and doesn’t work on any other USB cable. The case also dampens the sound so the speaker system isn’t ideal.
Catalyst Waterproof Case
This phone case is water, dirt and drop proof. The Catalyst waterproof case also features a front and back that snaps together and forms a compartment for your iPhone to keep it completely sealed. The case can take in a depth of 5 ft of water and is great to take for an underwater swim. It has a good price to performance value too, and is easily installed. The sound quality is relatively less muffled than most sealed waterproof cases. The Catalyst waterproof case is thin and lets the slimness of the iPhone remain.
Although the company claims that their waterproof phone case is designed to endure a 16.4 meter drop, it’s not really the case. The Catalyst case can take a drop, sure but not as high as 16 meters so if you’re going to buy it, try not to test it from big heights. The case adds an extra 40% weight to your phone, which is a lot more than the Lifeproof Fre. The headphone jack extension isn’t included with the phone and has to be bought separately. Also, the case is liable to wear and tear.
Pelican Marine Case
You can tell by the name, this phone case means business. The Pelican Marine case isn’t only limited to your underwater adventures. You can have it on your phone 24/7 owing to its lightweight and its thinness. The Pelican Marine Case has nice, beveled edges that improve the grip of the phone. The sound quality is least disturbed even with the double layered protective covering.
The Pelican Marine Case does have its cons though. For example, the major disadvantage of this phone case is that the screen can experience a rainbow effect that makes the LCD screen less visible. The buttons are also difficult to press and operate under the case, and although the sound quality of voice calls is great, the sound quality of music is not. The beveled edges also make the phone case thicker on the borders.
Like its brother, the LifeProof Nuud is a lightweight water proof case that comes in a variety of colors. It is shock proof too and provides excellent controls over your iPhone. It has easy installation and the case has a solid, firm feel to it. The rubber on the case gives excellent grip to it too. Unlike the LifeProof Fre, the sound quality isn’t affected either.
Unfortunately, the biggest shortcoming of this phone case is that it doesn’t have a screen protector so it’s not as safe as most other cases in the market. The LifeProof Nuud also costs an extra $10 than the Fre model. The buttons are a little difficult to press too. This waterproof phone case works more as a shock absorber since it can bear only 4 ft of the depth of water.
Lunatik AQUATIK phone case
Probably one of the most fashionable water phone cases in the market, the Lunatik AQUATIK has double layered protective casing that seals the iPhone completely like most waterproof cases. It has a polycarbonate body, making the grip on it great and slippage free. The screen protector is a Gorilla Glass so it makes the phone break-free and acts an excellent shock-absorber. It’s slim and doesn’t add an exta thickness to your phone. To put the cherry on top, it comes in a collection of different colors.
Among other things, the sound quality isn’t great and the voice calls are the most affected. Despite being slick and slim at first glance, it is a bit on the heavy side. It can only bear water up to 4 ft, which is only average for a water proof case. The installation process isn’t as simple as the other waterproof cases and you might need some extra shed tools to seal the covers from both sides.
Dog & Bone Wetsuit
The Dog and Bone Wetsuit phone case for the iPhone has great drop-protective and waterproof features. It is well built and sturdy and provides impressive grip. On top of that, it’s scratch resistant too! The phone case can bear about 6.6 ft depth of water which is excellent waterproofing.
The Dog & Bone Wetsuit phone case doesn’t come with a screen protector though, but that hardly affects its waterproofing abilities. The case muffles and crackles the speaker quality, and the headphone jacks only support Apple headphones. The flash in the camera doesn’t work properly either. The case is definitely heavier than most of the water proof phone cases making it less usable on an everyday basis.
